Originating idea: Students enjoy the Block area
Materials: Colored blocks
Measuring tape
Curriculum Content: Mathematics(36. Measuring, 38. Patterns), Language, literacy, and communication
Beginning: “Today we are going to make towers with blocks. When we are finished we will measure the tower we made with measuring tape.
Middle: Students and teacher will sit on the floor with the blocks in the center. Students can choose the blocks they want to use for their tower from the center pile. Notice patterns students are using as everyone continues to build their towers.
Extensions: Legos can also be used to create patterns.
End: “Let’s measure our towers with the measuring tape.” Use words like “tall, taller, and tallest” or “big, bigger, and biggest” when comparing the towers. Now let’s pretend like we’re bulldozers and carry our blocks to the block bin. What sound does a bulldozer make?”
Follow-up ideas:
Assessment: Students focused on building towers and also learned to cooperate with each other when the students wanted the same block.
